IMO, 'select' and 'choose' are used when there are multiple options to choose from (e.g.: from a list). If it is a GUI button for a web application, you can use 'click' (to indicate a mouse click) or use 'tap' for applications on devices with touch panels. I have limited experience, so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah, so far you are right concerning "click" and "tap". However, the application can be used on different screens. So when I open the application on my smartphone or tablet, "tap" would be alright but "click" would sound weird. And if I would open the application on my regular PC or laptop where I use a mouse, "click" would be totally fine but "tap" would sound weird. So I was looking for a word that would solve the tap/click problem for any application that can be used on all screens ("normal" screens and also touch screens)...
